Fausto Pinto is the current President of the European Society of Cardiology (2014-16). He also holds the position of Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon, Head of Cardiology Department at Santa Maria University Hospital, CHLN, E.P.E. in Lisbon, Portugal, Full Professor of Cardiology and Chair of Cardiology Clinic at Lisbon University Medical School in Lisbon, Portugal, Director of the Lisbon Cardiovascular Institute.
During his long academic career, he served as Post-Doctoral Fellow and Clinical Attending at Stanford University Medical School., CA, USA. (1989-1993), President and founder of the European Association of Echocardiography (2002-04), Councillor of the ESC Board (2004-06), Chairman of the CPC (Congress Program Committee) of the ESC (2008-10), Vice-President of the ESC for National Societies and Affiliates (2010-12) and President-Elect of ESC (2012-14). He is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC), American College of Cardiology (FACC), Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions (FSCAI) and American Society of Echocardiography (FASE).
Professor Pinto is also an active member of several Scientific Societies. More specifically, he is a Full Member of the Portuguese Academy of Medicine and honorary member of Colombian Society of Cardiology, Hungarian Society of Cardiology, Societé Française de Cardiologie, Societá Italiana di Ecografia Cardiovasculare, Romanian Society of Cardiology, Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences, Russian Society of Cardiology, Slovakian Society of Cardiology. He served as Editor in Chief, Portuguese Journal of Cardiology from 1999 to 2015.
During his career, he has published more than 300 papers and presented over 1300 lectures. Ischemic heart disease, cardiovascular imaging, particularly in the use of ultrasound in cardiology and pioneered the use of intravascular ultrasound in the study of graft atherosclerosis are among his main areas of interest.
