Panos E. Vardas
Panos Vardas is the Immediate Past President of the European Society of Cardiology and current Chairman of the Managerial Council of the European Heart Agency of the ESC in Brussels. Cardiologist by training, with a PhD in clinical electrophysiology from the University of London, Professor Vardas is serving as Head of the Cardiology Department at the University of Crete, Greece.
As a scientist, Professor Vardas has contributed to the development of more than 500 scientific articles, some of which have been published in high status medical journals. Moreover, he has edited a number of chapters and books focusing on arrhythmia, heart electrophysiology and cardiac rhythm management devices.
During his academic career and for the last thirty five years, he has had the opportunity to teach undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as to mentor talented physicians making the first steps in their career.
In addition to his professional and academic career, Professor Vardas is actively involved in health economics, health technology assessment and health care system administration issues. The European Heart Health Institute in Brussels, a core initiative during his ESC Presidency, is targeted at this broad area where health care inequalities, gaps, and new trends in healthcare systems are monitored and studied.
Professor Vardas’ vision and entrepreneurship capabilities are highly recognized in the European Cardiovascular Community.
